Extrait de Parfum vs. Eau de Parfum: What the Concentration Actually Changes

How long a perfume lasts is largely a question of concentration. Extrait de parfum carries the highest share of fragrance oil of any standard concentration — typically 20–40% — and it is the only thing IDENTÉ fills: 50 ml of your own formula at 20–25% oil. Here is what that number actually changes.

What is extrait de parfum?

Extrait de parfum — sometimes just "parfum" or "pure parfum" — is the most concentrated form of fragrance, typically 20–40% aromatic oil dissolved in alcohol. More oil means more substance in every spray: the scent unfolds more slowly, sits closer to the skin, and lasts longer.

One honest caveat before the comparison: concentration tiers are not legally defined. Every house draws its own lines, which is why the ranges below are typical, not guaranteed.

Extrait vs. eau de parfum vs. eau de toilette: what's the difference?

The difference is almost entirely the share of fragrance oil. That single number shapes longevity, projection, and how the scent develops over the day. Everything else is naming tradition:

ConcentrationFragrance oil (typical)Longevity (typical)Character
Eau de toiletteapprox. 5–12%approx. 2–4 hourslight, fresh, fades fastest
Eau de parfumapprox. 10–20%approx. 4–8 hoursfuller, clearer development
Extrait de parfumapprox. 20–40%often 8+ hoursskin-close, deep, long base

Treat these as honest industry ranges, not promises. Skin chemistry, dosage, and the notes themselves all move the needle.

How long does extrait de parfum last?

Typically eight hours or more — many extraits are still perceptible by evening. The base notes do most of that work: woods, resins, and musks carry an extrait long after the top notes have lifted. A few sprays are enough, which also means a 50 ml bottle goes further than you would expect from lighter concentrations.

Projection changes too. An extrait doesn't fill the room; it stays close. The people near you notice — the whole street doesn't. Some call that quieter. We call it more deliberate: sillage for the people you actually let close.

Why does IDENTÉ fill extrait — and nothing else?

Because a formula that exists exactly once should not disappear by lunch. Your scent is composed from your answers: 8 questions, a 60-note library, 13–15 notes chosen across top, heart, and base. Not a recommendation off a shelf. Your own formula.

Where your blend lands between 20 and 25% oil is decided by your answer to the intensity question in the quiz. It is made only after you order and filled by hand in Germany. The label carries the complete recipe — every note with its weight — plus the concentration, the fill date, a unique batch number, and a QR code for authenticity verification. You don't have to take our word on the concentration. It is printed on your bottle.

What does extrait de parfum cost?

At niche houses, extraits often cost several times as much. Your personal IDENTÉ extrait is €79 — not because there is less in the bottle, but because it is made only after you order: no stock. A trio of three bottles is €199.
